A commercial furniture retailer selling complete room sets needed a way to let customers experience furnished rooms in VR — walking through, swapping furniture, changing materials, and seeing live pricing. We built a three-module system from room creation to VR experience.
The retailer sells furniture in complete room sets for commercial spaces such as hotel rooms. Since furniture is typically sold as coordinated room configurations, there is a business need to create, edit, and display furniture setups for entire rooms. Existing 2D catalogs and flat renderings do not convey the spatial experience. The client wanted a VR application that enables realistic virtual tours of furnished rooms with interactive editing capabilities.
A three-module system:
1. Room Creator — a PC application for importing room layouts from SketchUp, adding background and decor items, placing sellable item placeholders, changing materials (walls, ceilings, floors), and adjusting lighting.
2. Item Ingestion — a PC application for importing 3D furniture models, defining metadata (price, material options, construction orders, item type), and saving to a database (local, on-premise, or cloud).
3. VR Room Planner — the main application running on Meta Quest 3 with photorealistic graphics. Supports tethered or standalone operation, controller or hand gesture controls, free navigation around the room, and full furniture editing: add, remove, move, rotate, and resize items, change materials, and track pricing in real time.
